Google Adsense policy violation
Let me start by explaining how i got into using adsense on my sites and then i will come to the actual topic as mentioned in the title of this post. I started a technology website back in 2004 to share my learnings online. I had no intention of earning anything from that website so it was just like a personal website with technology related articles from my area of expertise. I never did any SEO and i did not know anything about it either until much later. I used to occassionaly track my stats using awstats provided by my hosting company and that too once or twice a month. After about a year or so, i noticed that i had about 20-30 visitors daily and that got me a little excited about who is visiting my website, where do they come from and what do they search etc. I started monitoring my stats more regularly and even did some onpage optimizatoin as well for better search engine rankings.
It was then that i stumbled upon some article mentioning how website can earn based on google adsense technology. I applied for it without thinking much and they approved my application instantly. I started checking my adsense account regularly more than once daily hoping to have a huge earning but in a few weeks i realized that its just a hoax and all i earned was a a few cents and a few clicks. i stopped checking into my adsene account and i didnt check my stats either. |
One day after many weeks when i checked my adsense account, i was over the moon noticing quite a bit of earning and so many clicks and even alot of impressions, i started digging into how did that happen. Looking into my stats i noticed that my visitors have jumped from 20-30/day to 2000 / day, and that was the blessings from some links from a website which was at the top of my niche infact the very best one and it had page rank of 9 also and so i got my first cheque from google and i got excited and started working on my website more seriously and more consistently, i added 10-15 more sites to my network in last 5 years and i have been honest following all the rules mentioned by google and i never felt my account to be in any real threat for anything, despite the fact that some of my websites got hit by spammers and attackers but it went on strongly until very recently.
Last month i got an email from google with subject "Google AdSense ad serving has been disabled to your site" Many of you would know what that means, others who dont know will find out that this email is for a policy violation. One of my websites had violated a policy and google has stopped serving advertisements to that particular website. Note that my account remains active and i continue to earn from my other sites for same account, and only one website was in question. i was not overly concerned but i took some steps immediately to get rid of the pages. i found out that i was publishing rss feedback from a popular website, which was there since 2005 and just recently that site was either hacked or spammed n the rss started publishing across my site pages also and it contained some words which caused a policy violation trigger. |

I fixed the issue, took some more measures to ensure that such thing does not happen again, but i did not apply for getting advertisement enabled for that site. ads serving continued for another 10 days and then it stopped. I was inclined to have it enabled again since that site had about 5000 daily visitors and that generated some revenue which helped me pay the servers i am hosting my websites upon, but i decided that i should take this as an opportunity to experiment with other networks and have some comparison so that i know whats going to happen if my account gets banned. so i am doing those experiments now for which i will update in my next few articles.
my advise to others who are using Rss feeds or any form of auto generated data from other websites, it could be in the form of widgets, or Feeds, or through API integration, be very careful and add some custom filters in your code or have them run through a moderator manually. Not doing so can result in a policy violation and even worst.
You could also setup some google alerts to catch specific words across your websites so that you can get a track of incase one of your moderators account gets hacked.
