why are you using the eraser tool on a layer mask? Just paint with black or white on the mask making sure you have selected the layer mask thumbnail in the layer's palette
The problem I have described above happens when using any brush, including the eraser, sorry I should of made that clear. Regardless, has anybody seen the problem as shown in the screenshot? Or does anybody have any suggestions at troubleshooting? I am using PS CS2 version 9.0.2 on win xp. I have tried trashing the application data folder. I'm at a loss as to what to do next! Any help warmly welcomed!

The same thing happened straight after trashing preferences, and relaunching PS. But now it seems to be behaving itself, weird.
